Partnering with Waterhaul

Written by Nat Louis

Sustainability is at the core of everything we do at Bedruthan. So we are delighted to have recently partnered with the Cornish company Waterhaul to stock their sustainable eyewear products in the Create Cornwall shop online and onsite at Bedruthan Hotel. Together, we are also working to host community beach clean events.

Who are Waterhaul?

Waterhaul is a local Cornish business on a mission to make change. They repurpose abandoned, lost, and discarded fishing nets collected from local beaches and turn them into sustainable products such as sunglasses, optical glasses, litter-picking kits, and knives.

“We founded Waterhaul as frustrated marine conservationists - every winter our beaches were inundated with ghost gear and we were finding lines and offcuts daily. Our pile of collected nets grew and grew (as did our neighbours disapproval of the smell) which motivated us towards a solution. We developed a mechanical recycling solution to process various forms of end-of-life fishing gear and produced our first pair of sunglasses in 2018.”

Waterhaul Products

Waterhaul’s eyewear meets the technical demands of adventure, ocean exposure, and UV protection while also acting as ‘symbols of change’ for our oceans. Their sunglass frames last a lifetime, being made from nets that would last decades in the ocean. They utilize the strongest form of plastic in our oceans to produce exceptionally sustainable, recycled eyewear. Our in-house favorite is the Polaroid Fitzroy Slate sunglasses!

Purchase Waterhaul’s products in the Create Cornwall store located at Bedruthan Hotel & Spa or online.

Community Beach Cleans

On a beautiful Spring morning for World Environment Day, we worked together with the Waterhaul team to organise a beach clean on Mawgan Porth. Our group, equipped with litter picker kits provided by Waterhaul, gathered on the beach under clear blue skies and a low tide. We collected rubbish, microplastics, and ghost gear, which Waterhaul took back to their HQ. Despite our efforts, we were pleased to find Mawgan Porth was very clean!

Cleaning our beaches not only restores their natural beauty but also protects marine life from plastic and debris. By coming together, we can make a significant difference and set an example for future generations. Check our events page for future community beach cleans.

Feeling inspired? Equip yourself with gloves, a bag, and a positive attitude, or join the local community in Mawgan Porth for beach cleans every Sunday at 10 am, with all equipment provided. Plus, coming soon to our Create Cornwall shop, you can hire a Waterhaul Litter Picker kit to make your efforts even more effective.
